We’re Back in The Sewing Room

Classes have started up again after the Covid years.

After a few tricky years with very little teaching in The Sewing Room, it was time to turn it back into the classroom rather than the commercial sewing room it had been. I invited all those who had been in touch enquiring about classes to a Create & Grow relaunch free event. This was to give people a chance to see the classes on offer. They could add their suggestions and have a fun couple of hours sewing some machine sewn scrunchies or some hand sewn felt keyring whilst chatting all things sewing over a cup of tea.

Free Relaunch Session

After a lot of behind the scenes activity on the computer setting up classes, customer database, ticket selling software and payment systems, the latest sewing classes were ready for new customers to book their favourites. You can have a peep if you click on the “Buy Tickets” link below.

First class was the Beginners all day Sewing Class. Three keen new sewers attended and after learning some really useful sewing skills they made themselves a tote bag and matching zipped pouch or makeup bag.

“They use them on The Great British Sewing Bee, let’s give this rotary cutter a go!”

Cutting out fabric

I demonstrated how to wind a bobbin, thread the sewing machine, talked about needles, fabric, thread, presser feet, tools and different stitches. It was great to see them dive in and get to grips with their machines. They chose different stitches to try out, practising reverse stitch to secure, turning corners, sewing straight or wavy lines, straight stitch, zig zag, stretch stitches and decorative stitches.

After a chatty lunch break it was right back to the machines to sew up bags with their chosen fabrics. A demo of inserting zips for the pouches gave them the confidence to give it a go. I loved seeing their creations come together and see how eager they were to go home with makes ready for more. We chatted about different types of sewing machines and useful features to have so they could go and buy their own.

I thought their fabric choices were good, pretty and sturdy enough for everyday use. I really enjoyed the day and from their smiles I think they did too. Here’s to the next one.

“I’m a complete beginner and I found the course really helpful and feel more confident in looking for my own machine and getting started”

Laura Elston

“I really enjoyed the class, Mandy is a great tutor.”
